Summer is traditionally one of the quietest periods in the royal calendar, with members of the Royal Family taking a step back from official engagements to enjoy time away with their loved ones.
Prince William and Princess Catherine typically retreat to Norfolk with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis for a family holiday, while King Charles and Queen Camilla usually spend their summer break at Balmoral in Scotland, continuing a long-standing tradition established by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Before the family dispersed for their holidays, King Charles shared a message with the public, reflecting on what he described as the “great pleasure” he experienced throughout July as the Commonwealth Games came to a close.
Rather than issuing a conventional statement, the King opted for a more relaxed and personal tone, weaving in light-hearted pop culture references while also highlighting a cause that has long been close to his heart—protecting the environment.
The message reflected Charles’s well-known passion for sustainability, adding a touch of humour and personality as he looked back on the successful conclusion of the Commonwealth Games.

As the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow drew to a close, King Charles shared a heartfelt message thanking everyone who helped make the event a success.
“My wife and I would like to extend our warmest thanks to all those who played a part in making the XXIII Commonwealth Games such a wonderful success,” the King said.
Reflecting on the opening ceremony, he added: “It was a great pleasure to be able to open the Games as part of a magnificently executed ceremony celebrating Glasgow, Scotland and the enduring bonds of our Commonwealth.”
Charles also praised the dedication of those behind the scenes, saying: “You have worked tirelessly, with creativity, dedication and vigour, to deliver ten days of exhilarating sporting competition, along with cultural and artistic celebration.”
Adding his trademark humour, the King made a playful reference to Doctor Who, joking: “I know that the efforts such an endeavour demands from organisers, officials, volunteers and staff are – just like a certain blue telephone box – far larger than they may appear from the outside…”

The King’s long-standing commitment to environmental issues was also reflected in his message, as he praised the organisers for placing sustainability at the heart of this year’s event.
“Developing and realising a climate-conscious, deliverable model for this year’s Games has been a significant achievement,” Charles said.
Bringing his message to a close, the King celebrated both the sporting achievements and the spirit of unity that defined the Games.
“The Games have served as a stage for outstanding athletic excellence, a joyful celebration of all that unites our Commonwealth nations and a powerful reminder of sport’s ability to bring nations and generations closer together,” he said.
“I send my heartfelt congratulations to all those competitors who were victorious, while hoping that each and every one of you who participated, or contributed, will look back on these Games with immense pride in what you have accomplished.”

King Charles appears to be embracing life in Scotland as he enjoys his annual summer stay north of the border.
Dressed in a traditional kilt, the monarch attended the Mey Highland Games, where he watched a variety of classic Highland events, including a tug-of-war competition featuring local firefighters, the stone put and the iconic caber toss.
Never one to turn down a local tradition, King Charles also took the opportunity to enjoy a dram of Scotch whisky during the festivities, adding a light-hearted touch to his visit to the Highland Games.
